Mavericks no longer recognizes my Brother printer.

I have had Mavericks installed for over a year on my iMac and as of yesterday it no longer recognizes my Brother Intellifax 4750e printer. I downloaded the most recent driver from Brother and installed it, but it still didn't work, even though the driver is in the Printers folder. When I tried to add the printer through System Preferences, I got the message "Cant install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server". Thanks for any help you can offer.
